about my venture
The Beginnings: Apex began as small, ornery spark of an idea back in the fall of 2004. Then in 2007, under the behest of a good friend, I opened the book publishing branch of the business--Apex Book Company.
The Success: Our first title earned a Bram Stoker award nomination. Since then, we've released notable books like Jennifer Pelland's Unwelcome Bodies, the Dark Faith anthology, and Lavie Tidhar's first collection of international genre fiction The Apex Book of World SF.This success has not gone unnoticed.
The Opportunity: Just recently, a wonderful opportunity has fallen into my lap. A major distributor wants to carry almost all of Apex Book Company's titles. However, this opportunity requires me to shift our current business model, which is to provide short print runs, to that of a traditional press. Due to the advances of print-on-demand and e-book technology, Apex has stayed away from larger print runs, which means that our up-front costs have been minimal. This has allowed me to reduce our operational costs to invest in authors like Brian Keene, Gary A. Braunbeck, and Alethea Kontis to ensure we have a healthy release schedule. In order to leverage this exciting opportunity, I would have to invest a substantial sum in print books. This fiscal requirement goes above and beyond our normal business operations and normally, I wouldn't be opposed to that. In this instance, however, the issue is time. The distributor is anxious to get Apex out on the market. To do that, I need to come up with the initial investment for a full-scale run.
The Project: I've always been honest with my staff, the authors I've published and you, the readers. This is a great opportunity to help increase the size and the visibility of our books. Therefore, I've decided to try crowd sourcing. It's been successful for many and it seems like a fair way to ask you to invest in our success. If you're not familiar with the concept, you pledge X amount of dollars and you receive a milestone award for your money. I hope you will consider chipping in toward our goal of $5000. Not only will you receive some awesome rewards, you'll be helping push another quality genre publisher into the mainstream. After all, you are a part of Apex's success. You are the reason why opportunities like these fall into my lap.
