Helping Breathing Room Move Forward!

Breathing Room
Funding for: Renovations, equipment & rent to open!

about my venture

Yoga, much like life, is a personal practice that teaches loving kindness, compassion and patience through self-created challenges and victories. It is these values and teachings that help create the people we are and the world we want to live in. ~Margot Broom

My name is Margot Broom. I began teaching yoga in the back room of an antique shop two years ago, with the goal of making yoga available and affordable for all.  Since then a community of inspired yogis has developed as “Breathing Room”. The studio brings a creative approach to yoga as a community-based business, offering free events such as monthly themes, potlucks, movie nights and outings to create a feeling of being part of and connected to something outside of work and home. A challenge has arisen for us and our community, and we are reaching out with the hope that others will help us raise the money we need to keep Breathing Room alive and growing.

Our Challenge:

Our current space is no longer able to house us, and we have until November to find a new location for the studio. We have been looking high and low throughout New Haven, and have finally found one of the only spaces within our budget that will work. The challenge is that this “raw” space needs a significant amount of work to get up and running, and we need to come up with at least $10,000 to do so.

Our Goal:

Our goal is to raise at least $10,000 to help pay for the cost of renovations, equipment and rent for the first month so that we may reopen Breathing Room's doors as the new center of New Haven offering yoga, healing arts and local art. This "raw" industrial/office space is close to the busy downtown, and affords ample parking and easy walking access for the local and college population. We seek this funding for the renewal and restoration needed to offer more classes, workshops, exhibitions and opportunities for members of the community to express themselves and display their art.

 What makes this project different

What makes this project special and unique is the creative commitment in bringing yoga and art to the community in a new way. The new Breathing Room will not just be a yoga studio but a center for learning and sharing through art. The new space will have a “community sell space” where local artists can sell their crafts and creations. Each yoga studio will be used as an art gallery to exhibit and promote local artists as well. Along with yoga classes and workshops there will also be art-inspired workshops, classes and openings for artists. The Center will also have a room for healing arts, so that members of the community can stimulate their mind, bodies, and souls, while healing and pampering themselves. Breathing Room began as a small one woman business committed to creating an inviting space for people to express themselves. With the opportunity to grow we can expand on that mission, and bring a new kind of yoga studio and creative arts center to the community.

Challenges are designed for our personal edification and growth. This challenge has created the opportunity for us to grow, and do all that we can to be an even better space of love and support for our local community. Please help Breathing Room reach its goals so we can continue to share values and teachings to create the people we are becoming in the world we want to live in.

Margot Broom

Creator of Breathing Room / Breathing Room

Margot's passion for the creative goes far beyond her unique eye for design and innovative class sequencing. Margot has the ability to turn a room into a sanctuary, and a business into a community of people working together for a greater good. Margot began her life long love affair with yoga when she was just 13 years old and has made it a conscious effort to always have yoga in her life, by creating yoga programs at her high school and continuing her practice in college. Margot did her 200 hour training at the Joshi Yoga Institute in New York and has recently received her 500 hour certificate from Laughing Lotus Yoga Center in NYC. Margot has studied under master teachers such as Dana “Trixy” Flynn, Elena Bower, Sadi Nardini, Bryan Kest, Ralph Gates, and Rosie Taylor. Due to Margot’s business school education and previous experience working as an administrative assistant and decorator in an architectural firm, she has learned the essential skills it takes to manage projects and run a business. Margot has successfully owned and operated Breathing Room for the past 2 years and has committed to continuing her mission of providing good quality yoga at a fair price. Margot’s goal in opening Breathing Room was to create a space in which people could come and practice in their own way, hence the Breathing Room slogan, designed by Margot, “yoga for you”. By continuing on her path Margot is doing just that.
