about my venture

What is People to People?

People to People was founded by president Dwight D. Eisenhower over fifty years ago. He wanted to "give everyday citizens of different countries an opportunity to meet and get to know each other" in order to build understanding, friendship, and peace. The program allows students, like me, to see the world and explore places or meet people most travelers are not able to do.  You can learn more about People to People by visiting their website at www.peopletopeople.com.

Where will I go?

The title of my trip is called Modern and Ancient Civilizations.  We will be visiting Italy, Sicily, and Rome.

Italy:  My trip begins in Rome where I will visit the Colesseum, the Vatican, and the Sistine Chapel.  We will learn about the Forum and the secret catacombs of Roman history.  Since I read about it in school this year, I can't wait to see it up close.  We will also see the ruins of Pompeii and learn to toss a pizza with a professional chef in Palermo.  I am really excited to work with a Sicilian potter since I took a pottery class this fall.  We will learn about the history of Sicily and tour an ancient castle.  I will have the opportunity to hike Mt. Etna, an active volcano, and meet with a volcanologist.  Finally, we will help protect local sea turtles in the Mediterranean.  Then we're off on a ferry.

Greece:  After a tour of Patras, we will see where the original Olympic games were held.  Then we will visit the Acropolis and Parthenon.  Another stop will be in Crete.  It will be so neat to see where Paul, the apostle traveled.  And my parents were there on their honeymoon!  Then we head for home.

Why should you support me?

Helping me go on this trip will benefit me in many ways.  First, it is a wonderful educational experience.  I will get to see what I have been learning about in history and in the Bible.  That helps it come alive.  Second, traveling to other countries will help me see how other people live similarly, but also different than me.  Thirdly, this is a great way to meet new people and make new friends.  Fourth, because my dad is Italian, I will be able to visit the country of my heritage.  I can't wait to try out some of my Italian on the local people.  Ciao!

So thank you (grazie) for your donation.  I am grateful for all your help and I can't wait to tell you all about it when I get back.
